The App Store, iPhone 4 & Various Apps Earn Guinness World Records

May 14, 2011
In a press release that recently hit the Web, Guinness World Records has announced that Apple, the App Store, the iPhone 4 and various iOS apps have all broken existing world records. The iPhone 4 broke the record for the "Fastest-Selling Portable Gaming System," after selling an estimated 1.5 million units on its first day of availability. The press release compares these figures with those of Sony's handheld console, the PSP, which "shifted 200,000 units on its launch date in 2005." Interestingly, the Nintendo DS "took a week to move 500,000 consoles in November 2004." Additionally, the App Store claimed the world record for the "Most Popular Application Marketplace," along with records for the "Largest Downloadable Video Games Store" and the "Largest Line-up of Any Gaming System." Furthermore, various iOS applications - including Angry Birds, Plants vs. Zombies and Tap Tap Revenge all broke world records, too. Importantly, this highlights the very serious "gaming" aspect of Apple's iOS devices - namely, it's iPhone - which is something we don't always keep at the forefront of our minds. Essentially, iOS devices are more than just smart phones and tablets - they are games consoles in their own right, and these records undoubtedly prove that fact. (On a personal note, I find it interesting that I've barely touched my XBOX 360 since buying an iPhone, almost three years ago.) The App Store offers games as brilliantly simple as Cut the Rope, or as magnificent and graphically complex as Infinity Blade. And because some apps are universal, Apple fans really feel like they're getting their money's worth when one single app can run on three different iOS devices. Are you as impressed with the App Store as I am? Let me know in the comments. [via Los Angeles Times]
