Apple Adds "Find My Mac" Feature To New OS X Lion Developer Preview

June 8, 2011
Apple has added a "Find My Mac" feature in the fourth developer build of OS X Lion, the company's upcoming desktop operating system (which will be released in July). While a similar service is available for iOS device owners ("Find My iPhone"), no Apple-developed Mac version is yet available. After a series of rumors hit the Web claiming Apple would launch "Find My Mac" with OS X Lion, the company has now included the feature in the fourth developer build of the upcoming operating system. According to MacRumors:
One user has provided screenshots of the system in action, showing first of all how Find My Mac can be enabled in System Preferences, revealing that feature allows users to lock the screen of a lost machine while allowing guest access only to Safari in order to help facilitate recovery of the machine.
Importantly, the service integrates with the Find My iPhone app, allowing users to locate the whereabouts of their lost Mac, remote lock the computer or even perform a remote wipe, all from an iOS device. This is definitely a handy feature. OS X Lion is set to be released in July as a Mac App Store exclusive. In North America, the operating system will be available to download for just $29.99.
