Apple Leaks New Feature: "Automatic Download" - Over The Air App & Software Updates?

June 4, 2011

Apple has leaked what many believe to be an upcoming feature of the iOS, which could launch as early as iOS 5. As previously suggested by an iTunes "updates" page, Apple fans may soon be able to download app updates (and possibly software updates, too) automatically, over the air.

As you can see in the screenshot underneath (the screenshot above is just an illustration), the very last line of the paragraph gives the feature away.

It reads:

Or if your device has Automatic Download enabled for apps, your updates will download to your device without having to sync.
Obviously, this suggests that Apple is planning on launching an "Automatic Download" feature, at the very least, for iOS application updates. However, the fact that Apple included the words "for apps" suggests that users might be able to enable Automatic Download for other things, too, such as software updates. Recently, a rumor hit the Web claiming that Apple would launch over the air software updates with iOS 5, and that the Cupertino, CA company was currently in talks with Verizon regarding the matter. Now, it would appear that such a feature could indeed become a reality. Since the news of Apple's all-telling iTunes page hit the Web, the page-in-question disappeared, obviously suggesting that the information present on the page wasn't meant to be there in the first place. We'll keep you posted. In the meantime, let us know what features you're hoping to see in iOS 5 in the comments below! [via MacRumors]
