Apple Could Make Web Editing On iDevices A Dream In iOS 5

June 9, 2011
If you've ever tried editing anything on the Web using Safari for iOS, you'll know that it just doesn't work. However, a recent article claims that this could change in iOS 5. Here's the deal: Web editing on iOS devices isn't great because in the past, Apple hasn't included support for an important attribute called "contentEditable" within the mobile operating system. Apparently, support for this HTML5 attribute is now present within most Web browsers, sans Safari for iOS. Because of this, Web editing tools work poorly (if at all) on Apple's line of iOS devices. However, according to this thread over at Hacker News, things are changing. It would appear that in the first beta version of iOS 5, Apple has included support for "contentEditable," meaning that in preliminary tests, Web editing tools are running rather well on iPhones and iPads. Obviously, support for the attribute may not make its way into the final version of iOS 5 (there are still many, many beta versions to test before Apple nears a final release of the operating system). But, we will keep you updated. In the meantime, check out the rest of our iOS 5 related news by visiting our tag archive. [via TUAW]
