Eric Schmidt Talks Apple At D9 - Confirmed: Google Maps To Live On In iOS
by Joe White
June 1, 2011
At the currently-ongoing D9 event (hosted by All Things Digital), Eric Schmidt has discussed Apple. Importantly, the fromer Google CEO confirmed that Google Maps will continue to feature within Apple's mobile operating system.
This isn't exactly shocking: Previously, we heard from 9to5Google that Apple wasn't planning on launching its own, "Apple-developed" mapping software with iOS 5, and that the company would continue working with Google Maps. The fact that Schmidt has confirmed the news means we won't be seeing an Apple-developed mapping system launch with iOS 5.
Furthermore, Kara Swisher told Schmidt that Apple CEO Steve Jobs had politely asked her to "do more privacy stories on Android," and that "Android is a probe in your pocket." To this, Schmidt didn't directly respond. However, he did offer some advice on desktop security - in short, abandon your Windows PC and buy a Mac. (And make sure you use Google Chrome!)
As outlined by 9to5Google:
He had three important things to say about Apple: 1.Google just reupped with Apple on Maps (as per our story from last week) 2. Kara Said Steve Jobs called Android a Probe in your pocket [Schmidt didn't respond directly] and 3. On security, he said get aMac, dump your PC.Interesting, right? While we can probably expect an Apple-developed mapping service to launch in the future, it definitely looks like this isn't going to happen with iOS 5 (though turn-by-turn navigation could feature in Google Maps). We'll keep you posted on more Apple-related D9 news as it becomes available. In the meantime, let us know your thoughts in the comments.
