Warm Gun ($4.99) by Emotional Robots is a first person shooter (FPS) with full three-dimensional graphics that rival those found on a computer. You’ll be facing off in one of five wonderfully detailed post-apocalyptic environments.
You have four characters to choose from, each with their own set of weapons. There is the 49’er with a shotgun for a main weapon, the blacksmith with a chain gun, the shaman with a high powered rifle, and the preacher who wields a long-barreled pistol.
Once you’ve made your choice, you’ll be thrust straight into the action. There is a movement stick on the left with the aiming stick on the right. Just above that is an orange fire button. You don’t really need those last two though as aiming can be done directly by dragging the gun’s aim and tapping on the target you want to destroy.
On the iPhone 4, aiming controls are a little stiff. Even increasing the swipe sensitivity does not completely help with frames being a little jerky, though not unplayable. I would think that the A5 chip, found in the iPhone 4S and iPad 2, can handle the frame rate a lot better.
My only real complaint with the game is that dying is a lot easier than killing. In the offline mode, the computer enemies take quite a lot of shots before they are put down, whereas they can put you down in just one to three. This can get a little frustrating, but online multiplayer mode should be a lot more even so there’s nothing to hold you back except, of course, the epic skills of others.
Warm Gun is an attempt at creating a fully detailed 3D shooter for iDevices which has been very well executed. For all you FPS fans who have been looking for a worthy game on your iDevice, look no further.
