Blot, The Perfect Hand-Drawn Game
Blot ($0.99) by Majestic Software is perhaps the best hand-drawn game. Ever. No, I’m sure there are other contenders out there, but Blot certainly ranks up there.
You play as Blot, a blob of ink, as he flies through different pages (levels) in search of coins and adventure. Beautifully rendered backgrounds of different sketches pass by on the pages. One moment there’s a little pony, the next a war scene.
Gameplay is similar to Whale Trail, though you don’t lose speed as you fall back on collecting coins, and no evil cloud monster will get you if you scrape the ground.
Tapping on the screen (the only control in the game) will give Blot a burst of speed. You have to avoid the pushpins and pencils spread throughout the page, but feel free to indulge in blobs of differently-colored ink. Each color provides a different enhancement for a short time.
Smaller “Boost Buddies” are spread throughout the pages as well. Blot will grow a little each time you collect one, until he finally gets a speed boost. All obstacles clear out of the way, leaving you free to grab as many coins as you can.
However, one of the more entertaining features of this game is dying. There’s nothing more comedic than seeing your little buddy burst into a smear the moment you think you’re doing pretty good. Just make sure to avoid touching anything other than coins or bonuses because everything else makes him go splat.
The “Art sSpplies” store offers different power-ups and outfits to spend all of those hard-earned coins. A wide range of outfits are available, including an afro, a luchador mask, and even “blostachio.” The descriptions for each of them is priceless, such as the zombie outfit’s “A game without zombies? That’s unpossible!”
There’s nothing to not like about this game. The music, graphics, and humor all make this an awesome package of a game. Hopefully it won’t take a while for you to collect Boost Buddies before you head over to the App Store.
