Can You Draw A Flying Fish? This App Will Teach You How

February 20, 2012
A recent addition to the Education category of the App Store, iDrawMonsters is an iPad app that seeks to teach users the art and skill of, as its name suggests, drawing monsters. Don’t expect to be instructed on how to draw the likes of Frankenstein’s monster or Swamp Thing, though. That’s because iDrawMonsters is primarily concerned with teaching you how to create drawings of monsters that are more cute than scary. So, by all means, let the young’uns watch and join in the fun. The app features a drawing course consisting of two instruction modes. One involves watching a tutorial video that lasts for an hour and a half, while the other requires going through a series of images depicting the drawing steps. Either way, you’ll be learning about monster composition in particular and creature design in general. The video is a collection of eight lectures with explanations and drawings by an artist commissioned by the app developer. Included in the lectures are separate sessions on how to draw a flying fish, an alien monster, a cartoon eagle, and even a little vampire. In the video the artist uses Corel Painter software and a digital tablet, but you’re fine using just a pencil and a sketchpad in following the steps. Whether you consider yourself a drawing expert or a frustrated artist, you’ll find something to appreciate in iDrawMonsters. The app is compatible with the iPad and available now in the App Store for $2.99.
