Garmin Is Working To Utilize Google Street View In Their Navigon MobileNavigator App

At the 2012 Macworld / iWorld Expo, Garmin demonstrated new features for their StreetPilot onDemand app, which mainly included social media integration. Scheduled to arrive in the next couple of months, the company is now working on integrating Street View into the Navigon app for iPhone, plus a few non-iDevice related announcements. Being announced at Mobile World Congress 2012, the addition of Google Street View to the iOS MobileNavigator app is designed to help drivers better plan their trips. Before getting underway, MobileNavigator will display the actual destination location using Google Street View, letting the driver know what building(s) to look for instead of just an address. I like the idea, however, it's usefulness may not work as well as the theory goes. To elaborate, I've done this step manually many of times and it hasn't always been beneficial. The problem occurs from accuracy. Street View sometimes points to the wrong structure and even when it does properly identify the proper location, the Street View imagery is significantly out of date. Of course, this isn't always the situation and it certainly isn't Garmin's fault, though it is worth mentioning for those non-frequent Google Maps users. In addition to the iPhone news, Garmin also announced that Android users will be getting the lane assistance feature and the MobileNavigator app's upcoming availability for the Samsung Wave 3 and Cisco Cius business tablet.
