Pudding.to Offers Quirky Filters In Their Own Micro Photography Social Network

pudding.to (Free) by KTH is another social photo app for your iPhone (and Android too, if that’s what you’re into).

I know, I know. You're probably tired of hearing about new photography social networking apps. What can beat Instagram, right? Well, pudding.to is a great candidate, considering that it is also cross platform with Android devices. In fact, one week after the iPhone app was released (on Feb. 14), the network got over 500,000 users, which actually surpasses what Instagram did in the first week. So there is definitely potential here.

Pudding.to should be familiar with users of Instagram – create an account, start following people and friends, invite a few, and start sharing. The main appeal about pudding.to for me is the unique filters that it offers. If you love adding filters to your photos, then you’ll be surprised at what is offered in the app.

You can snap a new photo from the app (square format), or you can import from your Photo Library. When you import, you can even choose up to four photos. Once the image(s) are selected, pudding.to will take you to the filter screen.

I actually prefer the filters in here compared to the overly used ones of Instagram. Each of the filters in pudding.to is unique, and offers a fresh perspective on the image you are editing. In particular, I like the Disco, Americano, and the Bokeh effects – these add more character to your photos, and that’s always welcome. In fact, the Bokeh effect is pretty good overall, not just compared to Instagram.

If you used multiple images from your Photo Library, pudding.to presents you with a diptych image. If you are unsatisfied with the current layout, you can tap on the “Layout” button to get a randomized diptych. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a way to go back to a previous layout if you change your mind about it (this gets more difficult when you have the four images layout); it’s either you keep it now or it’s forever gone. I hope that the developers can implement a way to undo your layout changes – it would be really helpful.

Once you apply your filter and layout, the next step is to apply a “mood” to the image. I thought this part was a bit gimmicky, and didn’t particularly like it too much. However, you have to pick one to move on to the next step, which is a caption or description of the image. You can even attach a hashtag (useful for searches), what you’re currently listening to (a bit gimmicky, but whatever), and your location info. If you want to, you can send the image to Facebook and Twitter.

When you view other photos from your friends or other users, you can leave comments, like them, or even report them if it is inappropriate.

The profile view in pudding.to is more interesting to look at than Instagram, since it is more visually engaging. Avatars are shown in a large banner at the top, which features an overlay that displays the number of photos, followers, and following of the user.

With pudding.to, there is only one main navigational bar at the bottom, with three sections: Photos Feed, Camera, and Friends. Tapping on Photos Feed or Friends will display the other options buried in that section (Home, Popular, Nearby in Photos Feed, while My Friends, May Know, and Suggested are in Friends).

I like the filters in pudding.to enough for it to keep a spot on my iPhone. If you’re tired of Instagram (the novelty is wearing thin for me nowadays), then give pudding.to a try, especially since it’s available for free. While some parts are a bit gimmicky (would love to see the moods optional in the future), the overall value is high, especially since it is for both iOS and Android.
