It seems that pirates are back in vogue, in the App Store at least. And not just mere pirates at that, but Pirates! With a capital P and an exclamation point to boot. First, there was the recent release of the iPhone version of Sid Meier’s Pirates! Now, here comes The Pirates! Band of Misfits Movie Storybook for iPhone and iPad.

The Pirates! Band of Misfits is yet another iStoryTime offering from zuuka incorporated, the same publisher that just this week launched the first digital editions of the Dragon’s Lair comics. Having already published iOS storybook apps based on such beloved kid-friendly movies as “Shrek,” “Kung Fu Panda,” and “How to Train Your Dragon,” zuuka now adds the storybook app adaptation of the upcoming “The Pirates! Band of Misfits” to its growing catalog.

Piratize yourself, beard and all.

The Pirates! Band of Misfits is the tall tale of the Pirate Captain, a sea rover determined to beat his buccaneering opponents Black Bellamy and Cutlass Liz in order to win the Pirate of the Year Award. Readers of the storybook can also win the same award by searching for eight hidden treasures within the app. The storybook features Auto Play and Read To Me narration options as well as audio by Hugh Grant as the Pirate Captain. But perhaps the most noteworthy aspect of the app is its “Piratize Yourself” feature, which turns readers into pirates in real time via iOS 5 face detection.

The movie it’s based on comes out on April 27, but The Pirates! Band of Misfits Movie Storybook is available now in the App Store for a special introductory price of only $0.99. Shiver me timbers!
