Snail Bob ($0.99) by Chillingo Ltd is a puzzle game that slows things down just a bit, but still requires some quick thinking and reflexes.
Meet Bob, a cute and friendly snail that is on a mission. The goal? To get from point A to point B. Of course, being a snail, there isn’t much you can do to overcome obstacles that you will come across, but that’s where you come in.
Snail Bob features three areas for Bob to explore, which will range from construction sites to the lush forest, and finally, to the sands of Egypt. This is quite an adventuring snail, I must say. Each area will have 20 puzzles for you to solve, so there’s a good amount of content for your money.
In each level, Bob will show up at the beginning of a level and it’s your job to help him get to the exit. Bob will move on his own, but you can tap on him to make him stop and “hide” in his shell; tap on him again to make him move. As he crawls along, you will have to interact with elements in the level to get him safely across. There are switches, levers, sliding platforms, balloons, and more for you to use to get him to the goal. If Bob is moving too slow for your liking, feel free to speed him up with the “Speed” button in the side panel.
There are also three hidden stars on each level that you will want to collect to unlock the next area as well as additional content, like portraits and sculptures. You’ll have to carefully observe the setting to find them, and sometimes they will only appear as you make some progress on the puzzle. To collect the stars, just tap on them.
You will find out that even though the character is a snail, the game is actually pretty fast. You have to coordinate the timing of getting Bob across obstacles while also keeping an eye out for stars. Your score for each level will depend on the stars that you find and how fast you solve it. There is Game Center support for leaderboards and achievements, so you can see how much better you are at solving these tricky puzzles than your friends.
Like other Chillingo titles, such as Electric Tentacle and Cosmic Bump, Snail Bob features charming visuals and a fitting folk soundtrack. Combined with the fun and challenging puzzle solving, I’d say that this game is suitable for people of all ages.
Pick this one up today if you want to wind down this weekend. It’s available for $0.99 in the App Store for your iPhone and iPad.
