They Aim To Misbehave: Whedon's 'Firefly' To Be Reborn As Social RPG For iOS

July 22, 2013
Despite the travesty of its premature cancellation, Joss Whedon's "Firefly" is set to soar again - as an iOS app. From next summer, the popular franchise will continue to reach its fan base of "Browncoats" as a social role-playing game (RPG) called Firefly Online, which will allow iDevice owners to hire a crew, find a job, and make their own way out in the dark frontier of "the Verse." Though this isn't quite the "Firefly" return we were hoping for (another movie, or - dare it be said - a second season would have really made fans jump for joy), it's better than nothing at all. Details are few and far between at the moment, but we do know that the application is being developed by QMx and Spark Plug Games, and that it'll be available for both iOS and Android next summer. Andy Gore, chief executive officer of QMx, said:
At QMx, we know firsthand how great and powerful a franchise Firefly is and how mighty the Browncoats are. It has always been our mission to bring the Verse to life for our customers in every way possible. The idea of creating an interactive experience where fans can have their own Firefly adventures — well, that’s just too shiny for words.
Concerns have been raised as to whether the social RPG will do "Firefly" proud, however. With Joss Whedon reportedly not on board in any form, and the show's original cast not providing voiceovers, the situation so far doesn't look good. What's more, the trailer for Firefly Online gives little away: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y364b2Hcq7I&feature=youtu.be

As mentioned, Firefly Online is a long way off, and as such more details will likely not surface for some time.
