Both of my favorite text editor for iOS and my favorite text editor for Mac have just been significantly updated. For the former, I’m referring to iA Writer, and for the latter, I’m referring to iA Writer.

Yup, iA Writer is my writing app of choice on both iOS and Mac, on account of its simplicity and functionality. And I’m delighted to learn and subsequently report that it has just received updates on both platforms.

On iOS, iA Writer now names new documents automatically and handles document renaming better. It now also includes localizations for Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish, plus the following enhancements:

  • Greatly improved keyboard bar
  • Pull document changes from Dropbox
  • Conflict resolution for Dropbox
  • Supports Large Text accessibility setting
  • Fixed jiggling for Asian text
  • Open most plain text documents
  • Mail signature switch
  • Performance improvements

iA Writer for Mac

As for the app’s Mac edition, it boasts a major new feature in the form of Markdown to Microsoft Word 2007 conversion. In fact, it’s touted as the first text editor to offer this feature, with which you can easily export Markdown to .docx and import (via drag-and-dop) .docx to Markdown.

The newly updated iA Writer for Mac also offers the following improvements:

  • Extensive in-app help (Command-?)
  • Fully HTML5 compliant export
  • Reference link and image syntax support
  • Format bar and shortcuts
  • Print formatted option
  • Print header and page numbers
  • Asian input improvements
  • Italics
  • Performance improvements

Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 5.0 or later, iA Writer for iOS is available in the App Store for $0.99. On the other hand, iA Writer for Mac is compatible with OS X 10.6 or later and is available in the Mac App Store for $4.99.
