Getting Even: Square Acquires Expense-Sharing Startup Evenly

December 12, 2013
Last week, Square acquired the photo app startup Viewfinder to, in the words of the mobile payments company itself, "work on seller initiatives." Now, it has announced that it has acquired the expense-sharing startup Evenly for the same reason. Evenly has this to say about what's next for the company after joining Square:
At Square, we'll help make commerce easy for millions of buyers and sellers. We'll tackle huge challenges alongside so many talented engineers and designers. Together, we'll continue to bring simplicity, transparency, and immediacy to commerce. We're thrilled about the opportunity ahead!
Indeed, Evenly sounds like a good complement to Square's services, particularly Square Cash. Launched just a couple of months ago, Square Cash allows person-to-person money transfer over email. As for Evenly's namesake service, it will remain available for existing users until Jan. 15, 2014, even as its official iOS app has been removed from the App Store. After that date, Evenly will be shutting down completely. For more information, read Evenly's FAQ page.
