Shelf Control: Presenting BookAwardz And Its Listing Of Award-Winning Books

March 3, 2014
In honor of the recently concluded 86th Academy Awards ceremony, I'm dedicating this week's edition of Shelf Control to an iOS app that has to do with book awards, simply called BookAwardz. BookAwardz is essentially a handy reference app that offers a comprehensive listing of books that have won the most prestigious major English-language book awards in the U.S. and the U.K. It's actually touted as the only mobile app to contain complete lists of all the winners and finalists of the following awards:
  • Pulitzer Prize (for fiction, non-fiction, biography, history, poetry)
  • National Book Award (for fiction, non-fiction, biography, history, poetry, young people's literature)
  • PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction
  • Man Booker Prize (for fiction in UK)
  • Caldecott Medal (for children's picture books)
  • Newbery Medal (for children's literature)
  • Edgar Allan Poe Award (for mystery fiction)
In addition, BookAwardz includes Modern Library and The Guardian's respective lists of the 100 best novels. With a no-frills and extremely simple interface, BookAwardz makes it easy to choose your next great read among award-winning and critically acclaimed books. The app comes with filtering features that let you narrow the lists down to show winners only or books from the last 10 or 25 years only. It also lets you compile a list of titles you wish to read or acquire with its WishList feature. Moreover, BookAwardz lets you search its entire database for a specific book by title or author. Oddly, though, the awards won by a book are not indicated in the search results. In any case, for each book the app includes a book cover image, a synopsis, and a link for more details, reviews, and purchasing options. Optimized for iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 6.1 or later, BookAwardz is available in the App Store for $2.99. Updates to the app will be released for free as new annual award winners are announced. As always, if you have suggestions for Shelf Control, please feel free to email me at aldrin@appadvice.com or simply leave a comment below. [gallery link="file" order="DESC"]
