How to setup new Notification Center widgets in iOS 8
We recently told you about the new app extensions in iOS 8. Now, lets take a closer look at the Today app extension.
As we explained on Wednesday, the Today app extension allows a user to get a quick update or perform a quick task in the Today view of Notification Center. Apple calls this type of extension a widget.
In the example below, widgets for The New York Times and Yahoo Weather are shown:
Here is the new Kindle widget:
Widgets aren’t activated by default. How do you do this?
First, the app developer must be using the new code to enable the extensions. Most developers are alerting users of this support the first time the app is opened following the iOS 8 update. You can also take a look at the app description page in iTunes to see if the app is compatible.
To turn on widgets, go into Notification Center and under Today select “Edit.” From this screen you can select the widgets to use, and not to include. You can also sort the widgets. When you are finished, select “Done.” Then say hello to your new Notification Center widgets.
We think you’ll enjoy this new feature. The most important step is making sure each widget is activated in Notification Center.
