Apple Pay Now Supported by 5,000 Wells Fargo ATMs
More than 5,000 Wells Fargo ATMs around the United States now work with Apple Pay thanks to “tap and pay” near-field communication. The bank hopes to upgrade the rest of the company’s more than 13,000 ATMs with the same hardware by 2019.
With the technology, you can initiate an ATM transaction by holding your iPhone or Apple Watch with mobile payment functionality near the machine’s NFC-enabled terminal. You’ll then need to enter your PIN.
The 5,000 Wells Fargo ATMs with NFC functionality work with other digital wallets, including Android Pay, Samsung Pay, and the bank’s Well Fargo Wallet for Android.
This isn’t the only way you can authenticate at a Wells Fargo ATM without your bank card. Earlier this year, Wells Fargo began offering a one-time access code feature that allows you to authenticate at an ATM by entering an 8-digital code generated by the company’s app, along with your PIN.
As Jonathan Velline, head of Strategy and Administration for Community Bank, explains:
This spring’s launch of one-time access code technology at all Wells Fargo ATMs has resulted in nearly three million card-free ATM access code transactions. Card-free ATM use will take another leap as we introduce NFC functionality.
First introduced in 2014, Apple Pay is a mobile payment and digital wallet service. The service is available on most current-generation Apple products, including iPhone/iPad, Apple Watch, and select MacBook Pros.
