"Angry Birds" The Animated Series Is Under Way

January 19, 2011
To a very many, Angry Birds is a game we can't stop coming back to, but as a whole, it has gone far beyond that. It has become a cultural hit, influencing merchandise and accessories from T-shirts to plush toys and ringtones to iPhone cases. Not unlike a few other extremely popular games, Angry Birds has even had prior rumors of heading to Hollywood. It appears that those rumors are true. Rovio Mobile CEO, Mikael Hed, officially acknowledged that discussions and plans were and are still ongoing for an Angry Birds animated series.
"We have been looking at that for quite a while and that is definitely one of my personal big focus areas right now โ€“ to work on broadcast content for Angry Birds," Hed told C21, fresh from his most recent trip to Los Angeles.
Actually, the groundwork discussions are already over and Rovio is at the beginning of the production phase. While Hed was not willing to disclose who they've had talks or partnered with, both the cinematic trailer and Angry Birds and the Mighty Eagle videos were made in conjunction with the Finnish production company Kombo. A full length movie doesn't sound to be an immediate possibility, if any, but a show will definitely come. One item that hasn't been finalized is whether this animated sitcom will become a television show, be available exclusively online, or both. With the lack of a television broadcast option is likely due to high cost, Mikael did comment that a TV show is by no means out of the running.
"Things are moving along. The media is still open โ€“ there will be some animated content for sure, that I can promise with 100% certainty โ€“ but the exact distribution channel for it I still can't say,"
I'm pretty psyched about this. The biggest question would seem to be; will Mikael Hed and company be able to make it the next Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as in the late 80s to mid-90s cartoon, or will it become the next The Jetsons? [New York Post via C21Media]
