How The iPhone On Verizon Can Even Benefit AT&T Customers

January 13, 2011
Many have been waiting to ditch AT&T as their iPhone cellular service carrier. While users who despise AT&T are cheering, those of us who plan on staying with the original iPhone partner will likely have our celebrations as well. As disgruntled current iPhone owners change grids and the iPhone user base begins to spread a bit more, AT&T customers shall begin to see cellular network strain decrease. The decrease will involve both the number of devices accessing cellular towers and the amount of data traffic the towers and backbone need to deal with. Another beam of sunlight for AT&T customers, maybe not quite the company, is how Verizon competing for iPhone fans could provide for some interesting spoils. As we reported yesterday, AT&T is already considering matching features, like the new Personal Hotspot. I wouldn't consider holding my breath on the unlimited data plan options to reappear, but maybe AT&T will offer higher data caps on current data plans or the new Personal Hotspot feature for free. Who knows what other incentives Verizon will toss out, which could also force AT&T's hand? Even though AT&T may lose revenue from iPhone handset sales and monthly service charges, there will still be plenty of iPad, iPhone, along with other smartphone and tablet customers to pony up on services. All I can say for sure is that I'm all for the reduced network congestion.
