Hot On Alaska's Heels, American Airlines Aims To Replace Paper Manuals With iPads

June 17, 2011
Following Alaska Airlines' adoption of the iPad as a manual-viewing tool, American Airlines now plans to incorporate Apple's popular tablet within the cockpit. Back in May, we told you how Alaska Airlines planned to replace all paper manuals (which typically weigh over 25 pounds) with iPads. Not only is this more convenient for pilots, but - as the manuals have to be updated regularly - it's also good for the environment, too. Now, American Airlines is joining the club. The new iPad system will apparently be tested on two flights, running between LA and Tokyo. If it proves to be successful, the airline will presumably take the plunge and replace paper manuals with iPads on all flights. And remember - while pilots take off with their iPad, passengers are able to check-in using an iPhone. Sounds good to me - all I need is for Manchester Airport to catch up. [via Apple Insider]
