It’s been nine and a half months since the last major update to Notability. But that’s all right, because a new, really major update has just been issued to the popular note-taking app.

As pointed out by developer Ginger Labs, this new update is the biggest update to Notability since the app’s launch in April 2010. And that’s because the update is none other than the app’s long-awaited universal update:

Developed with great care, Notability is gorgeous on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. iPad users will be instantly familiar with the iPhone version, and anyone exploring Notability for the first time will love the freedom to capture ideas, review notes, and fill-out forms on any device.

That’s right: formerly compatible with iPad and iPad mini only, Notability is now a universal app that works with iPhone and iPod touch as well. Specifically, Notability now works with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, fourth-generation iPod touch, and fifth-generation iPod touch.

Notability

What’s more, Notability’s universal update, which pushes the app to version 5.0, comes with iCloud support. As a result, all of your Notability notes can now stay up to date across all of your iDevices.

Notability 5.0 also includes bug fixes, updated themes, improved search, and support for scaling and rotating handwriting using the scissor tool. Moreover, it adds localization for Dutch, Korean, and Portuguese.

Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 5.0 or later, Notability 5.0 is available now in the App Store as a free update or as a new $2.99 download.

Notability is rightly listed as an “essential app” (above all others, in fact) in AppAdvice’s Handwriting Apps for iPad AppGuide.
