Cydia Tweak: Lock Your iPhone Using Its Proximity Sensor With SleekSleep

January 19, 2014

Do you have a broken Lock button, or are you simply looking for a cooler way to lock your jailbroken iPhone handset? Then consider downloading SleekSleep, a brand new jailbreak tweak that allows users to lock their smartphone using its proximity sensor.

After installing the $0.99 package, users can put their iPhone to sleep using several new actions, all of which can be configured from a new preferences pane that SleekSleep adds to the built-in Settings app.

You can wave at your iPhone to have it lock, for example, or you can configure the handset to sleep following a more definite swipe across its proximity sensor. Both can be adjusted within the Settings app, and aspects such as “Maximum Swipe Duration” and “Swipe Timeout” periods can be altered. It’s possible to choose how many swipes activate SleekSleep, too.

You can also enable or disable the jailbreak tweak outright from this preferences pane, and SleekSleep can be disabled for incoming calls and also for when the handset is placed in landscape mode.

The features available are definitely impressive. That being said, however, the jailbreak tweak comes with one definite downside. If you want your iPhone to continually look out for a wave or swipe (using the “Sensor Insomnia” mode), the handset’s battery life is naturally going to suffer.

As its developer explains:

Sensor Insomnia keeps your proximity sensor (as well as other things) enabled when your screen is shut off and the phone is not connected to a power source. This option may drain your battery faster than usual.

If your Lock button has broken, it’s worth noting that the free Activator jailbreak app allows users to reassign the “Lock iPhone” action to a different gesture. For example, you could have your handset lock with a swipe from the left to the right of its screen, or following a triple-press of the Home button.

But, for those looking for a cooler means of locking their iPhone, SleekSleep could be of interest. As mentioned, the jailbreak tweak can be downloaded in the Cydia Store for $0.99, and it’s optimized for both iOS 6 and iOS 7.
