Twitter Brings New App to Apple TV Ahead of NFL Games
On Wednesday, Twitter launched an app for Apple TV, which will allow users to stream the first 10 Thursday night games of this year’s NFL season. Twitter was awarded NFL streaming rights earlier this year.
Besides football, the free Twitter app also highlights other content, including the NBA, MLB, and Bloomberg TV. Top tweets and popular Vine and Periscope posts are also featured.
Twitter has released similar apps for Amazon Fire TV and Microsoft Xbox One. However, only the Apple TV app allows users to watch live video and tweeted video clips at the same time.
In April, Twitter secured the NFL’s Thursday night streaming rights against Verizon, Yahoo, and Amazon.com. Facebook and Apple were also in the running at one time.
Last December, the NFL sent formal requests for its “Thursday Night Football” package. For the first time, the request included a digital streaming component. In February, the NFL announced that CBS and NBC would each air five games on Thursday nights. All of those games are simulcast on the NFL Network.
