1908 Race Riot AR is an Augmented Reality-based mobile app that presents the 1908 Springfield, Illinois Race Riot, a horrific episode of racial violence perpetrated against African Americans in the Capitol of the State of Illinois which led to the founding of the NAACP. The app provides visitors with the ability to follow a self-guided tour of downtown Springfield, Illinois that presents the event and how it unfolded over three days. The app is centered around a GPS-based map that guides visitors to nine numbered AR stop locations. Each AR stop represents a place of significance where users are able to view animated AR recreations of events that took place. These animated AR recreations are viewed as overlays on the real present day landscape. The app was made possible by the US National Park Service’s Abraham Lincoln Home and the organization Looking for Lincoln.
