The city of Jerusalem is a sacred place to a number of religions. The city is spiritually and historically significant to Jews, Christians and Muslims. Some of the most sacred of places can be found in Jerusalem such as churches, synagogues and mosques. For Muslims, this city in Arabic is known as Al-Quds or Baitul-Maqdis ("The Noble, Sacred Place") because of Masjid Al-Aqsa (The furthest Mosque).
The mosque’s boundaries are 144,000 square meters (1,550,000 sq. ft) covering approximately 35-acres of land. Masjid Al-Aqsa is not the black dome or the golden dome, but, the whole region as shown here. It is from Makkah, the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) was transported (known as Isra’-night journey) on the Buraq (Horse with wings) on a miraculous night journey to Masjid Al-Aqsa. Therefore, making this mosque one of the holiest sites for Muslims.
