Pt. Bhimsen Joshi was born in a town called Ron, in the Gadag district of Karnataka, India. He was a vocalist in the Hindustani Classical Music tradition, known for the Khayal form of singing, as well as for popular renditions of devotional music.

He began his musical training under Agasara Channappa and subsequently went to Pt. Shyamacharya Joshi, a classical singer. In 1936, Sawai Gandharva, a native of Dharwad, agreed to be his guru. Panditji stayed at his house in the guru-shishya (teacher-student) tradition and continued his training.

Pt. Bhimsen Joshi started his career at a very young age of 19 when he performed live in 1941. His performances were acknowledged by fans and critics alike. He was a purist who did not dabble in experimental forms of music, except for a series of Jugalbandi recordings.

He was widely recognized in India due to his performance in the ‘Mile Sur Mera Tumhara’ music video, as also, when he was a part of ‘Jana Gana Mana’ produced by A. R. Rahman on the occasion of 50th year of Indian Republic.

Pt. Joshi's iconic status in the music world has earned him a whole generation of fans and music aficionados who loved his style of singing.

In 1998, he was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, the highest honour conferred by Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy for Music, Dance and Drama. In 2009 he received the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.
