In addition to the app, you will need your ID card, electronic residence permit, or eID card for citizens of the EU or EEA for each identification process. Initial activation of the online ID function:

When you use the online ID card for the first time, the app guides you through the initial activation process. During this process, you define your personal 6-digit PIN, which you can use to identify yourself online in the future.

How it works:

Your ID card data is stored in encrypted form on the chip card in your ID card and can be securely read by a smartphone and the BundesIdent app. Prerequisite: The smartphone has an NFC interface (near-field communication interface). Almost every current smartphone is equipped with such an NFC interface.
After entering your 6-digit personal PIN, your ID card data is decrypted and you can identify yourself online. For decryption, you then place your smartphone on your ID card.
