THE SHOW
'You will go out into the world and get elected onto as many public bodies as possible...Dress suitably in short skirts and strong boots, leave your jewels in the bank and buy a revolver.' - Constance Markiewicz’s message to women

Buy a Revolver is an interactive audio adventure telling the story of the remarkable Constance Markievicz, who - whilst in prison - was the first woman elected to the British Parliament.

Constance was an ambitious and important activist, heavily involved in the revolutionary nationalism movement in Ireland; she was jailed and originally sentenced to death for her role in the 1916 Easter Rising, although she was later recommended mercy "solely and only on account of her sex." When she was elected to the British House of Commons, Constance refused to take her seat, instead joining her Sinn Féin colleagues to create a new parliament.

Experienced through a mobile phone, Buy a Revolver tells the astounding story of a woman confined and fighting to liberate herself, her sex and her country. As audiences listen to the piece, meeting Constance herself, they will be led on a physical journey exploring confinement, the acts of looking out and looking in, revolution and risk.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Buy a Revolver is a mobile phone-based interactive experience. The show will be experienced by small groups together through an app on each person's mobile phone. As Constance tells her story, the app will lead each audience member on a physical journey through the festival site and the surrounding environment. The piece is interactive, participatory and responsive, bringing groups of audience members together to reflect on, consider and explore autonomous rule, revolution and risk.
