Fishes are cold-blooded vertebrates that live in water and breathe dissolved oxygen through organs called gills. They are generally characterized by their size, shape, feeding habits, and water temperature preference (their habitat). The Freshwater Fishes of California app shows 111 species that are found (native or introduced) in the freshwaters of California. Please note that some species, such as salmon or steelhead trout, may no longer be present upstream of dams that lack fish passage.
The Freshwater Fishes of California present the identification criteria of each species and – if species within the same family have distinguishing features – these features are listed for easier identification.
Apart from these identification descriptions of each species, the distribution of the species is given, as well as any other names and high-resolution photos.
A glossary of over 400 special terms related to fishes is included, as well as high-quality illustrations explaining the internal and external anatomy of fishes.
Comfortable search functions are also part of the stylish and intuitive user interface and allow you to search for fish names and also do fulltext search in the descriptive text.
