Improving Maternal and Child Health care in Rural West Africa through High-quality Education for Nurses and Midwives (Classroom to Care) is a project that seeks to ensure that the skills and competencies of teachers, student nurses and student midwives are strengthened and to revolutionize nursing and midwifery private schools’ capacities.

Takeda Pharmaceutical Company with the support of IntraHealth seeks to transform the WAHO training curriculum into e-learning modules which will bring about betterment in access to information and overall healthcare delivery. This project will entail digitizing part of the WAHO curriculum (Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, MNCH) for a defined set of ‘modules’ aligned with WHO standard MNCH curriculum for nurses and midwives pursuing undergraduate degrees. This project is being undertaken across 12 universities with approximately 1,200 students in three countries that include Niger, Senegal and Mali. In collaboration with WAHO, IntraHealth with the support of Empower School of Health is implementing the project across these 12 universities and will ensure its reach beyond.

The primary goal of the overall project is to ensure that private universities in these countries and areas receive accreditation and thus nurses and midwives are able to provide the highest quality care to the population in underserved areas. The following objectives are being pursued: (1) to strengthen the competencies of the teaching faculty on how to incorporate digital materials into the curriculum and deliver it effectively. (2) To strengthen the competencies and skills of nurses and midwives through appropriate standards of care and education. (3) To ensure the integration of the tools and techniques developed for the nursing and midwifery curriculum not only during pre-service education but also for continuous professional development.
