The waters of the Dnieper and Black Sea mirror the march of Ukrainian history. The Dnieper trade route – “from the Vikings to the Greeks” – gave birth to “Kievan Rus”, perhaps the most glorious state of early medieval Europe. In time Kievan Rus became “Mother” of today’s Russia, a country which in turn begot the Soviet Union.
