《象形字典》以有機、系統的結構全新編撰，摒棄以讀音為序（以英文字母表的排序為準）、零散分裂的編排方法，以漢字的象形素材來源為依據，將整部字典分為“天部”、“地部”、“人部”三大部分；每一部分若干篇，每一篇分若干族，每一族包含若干個字頭，每一個字包含以下幾個部分：“字形演變”、“字源解說”、“字義引申”、“詞彙分類”。
《象形字典》目前收錄漢字 3000 多字。
《象形字典》非全息字典，研究重點在：古代字形所包含的圖畫性形象與漢字本義之間的邏輯指向關係；漢字本義與現代漢語常用義項之間的源流派生關係。
《象形字典》在解釋漢字本義時，以古文字形（篆文字形，尤其是甲骨文字形、金文字形）中的圖畫性元素為根本依據，以先秦典籍中的例句為佐證，以古今辭書的諸多觀點為參考，最大限度忠於漢字的“象形精神”。
