The Essential Care for Small Babies ( ECSB ) curricula are a part of a series of newborn care training modules called Helping Babies Survive( HBS ) developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics in collaboration with other selected partners under the auspices of the Survive and Thrive Global Development Alliance. These modules, which include the well-tested and scaled-up curriculum on neonatal resuscitation, Helping Babies Breathe( HBB ), are designed to assist health care providers in low-resource settings to deliver consistent and quality newborn care in order to achieve reductions in newborn mortality.
ECSB is an evidence-based educational program designed to increase cognitive knowledge and develop skills of health care professionals in managing small babies in low-resource areas based on best practices. The provider guide suggests ways for quality improvement methods to strengthen health systems. The tool focuses on the immediate care of care of the well small baby by maintaining normal temperature ,
supporting breastfeeding and alternative feeding methods to give breast milk , preventing infection and
recognizing and responding to problems and Danger Signs. One may use HBSECSB app as a preparation for and during the initial training course. Others will use it after the completion of the course or as ‘Aide memoire’ point of care tool at bedside. It will guide activities that will help providers maintain and improve knowledge and skills through review and practice. The HBSECSB also outlines ways to improve care in your facility.
