I Was Here AR
What is it about?
This App is part of the project I Was Here AR, and is intended to be used to reveal immersive 3D scenes in real-time when viewing the project photographs in Augmented Reality. Paulo Majano’s I Was Here AR recreates actual outdoor locations across Surrey BC, Canada, and its surrounding region. Each location is captured both as a photograph and as a 3D Virtual Scene (created by 3D scanning individual elements on location). Each photograph contains a latent image - a three-dimensional immersive scene that when revealed, like the latent thought in Freud's theory of dreams, offers potentially different narratives and new layers of meaning not initially visible in the exhibition photographs.

Viewers can scan the photographs: “The Carved Tree” or “The River Edge” in the gallery space using the App, and interact with the scene in Augmented Reality to reframe the composition from different points of view. Through this virtual view, viewers can move in for a closer look, or look behind objects to reveal elements not initially visible in the original photo. Ironically, since the viewer must move around the photograph to fully see it, this virtual medium creates the potential for active, physical interactions with the immaterial digital capture.
