Are you a Japanese speaker who's interested in mushrooms, and you’d like to know how to say your favorite mushroom’s name? Maybe you’d like to communicate with Japanese myco-nerds but you don’t know what they call the mushrooms you know—and normal dictionaries don’t help at all! This app is for you!

(Note: this is a dictionary, not a field guide. If you don't know very much about mushrooms and want to learn the basics, you might find a field guide app to be more fun to use.)

The Japanese Mushroom Name Dictionary lets you look up Japanese common names (wamei) and gives you the equivalent scientific binomial, or vice-versa. You can look up over 5,000 mushrooms, lichens, and slime molds! Save your favorite mushrooms to your Favorites list and browse through them at any time! All names are based on the latest mycological research, with authors and paper names given. Mushroom pages link to Japanese and international websites where you can view further details and photos!

The app works without internet, so use it on the go or while hunting mushrooms in the forest! (External websites require internet.)

I hope that this app will allow users to learn more about the beautiful and creative “wamei” that are used in Japan, and will further communication and interactions between Japanese and non-Japanese mycophiles throughout the world. Please give it a try!

(NOTE: this app’s UI is in Japanese! Mushroom names are written in Japanese katakana, not romaji. Basic Japanese reading abilities are required to make good use of the app.)
