The Kalimba, or African thumb piano, is a modern member of a family of ancient African instruments called lamellaphones. In Africa, each cultural group has their own type of Kalimba, and their own name.
Kalimba is kind of soft and quiet, so you won't be worried to get any complaint about its sound from your neighbors. The con is its limited music styles, that it is best and only suited to play soft and light music.
The 17 keys are staggered and produce a sweet and crisp sound, ideal for acoustic playing. The keys are made from manganese steel, which is a tough but also a flexible metal. The keys, therefore, won't be too hard on the fingers. Some Kalimbas offer stick-on notes and letters.
The Kalimba is one of those rare instruments that you can play without really knowing anything about music or anything about the instrument. There are certain "rules of thumb" you can learn, and you can sound really good armed with those and a bit of confidence.
If you are going to "get good" on the Kalimba, you should try to play it a bit every day. Do it for 15 minutes a day. Once in a while, you will probably really get into playing, and 60 minutes will go by before you realize it.
