This resource is based on the establishment of the first primary school in New Zealand in Rangihoua, the Bay of Islands in 1816. Wiriwiri and Kina are the main characters in this story.

The story focuses on what happened to a couple when they first started school and learned to write their first words in te reo Māori. They started school in August of 1816.
