Where does the term 'la dolorosa' come from when referring to the bill that is asked for in an establishment?

'Asking for la dolorosa' is the act of requesting that the bill be brought for what was consumed, for example, in a restaurant.

This way of referring to the bill comes from a direct reference to Our Lady of Sorrows, also known as the Virgin Dolorosa, whose image was that of the Virgin Mary at the moment of pain after the death of her son Jesus on the cross.

Comparing a bill with the mother of Christ arose in the traditional Madrid of the Austrias (from the 16th century), which began to open taverns when the capital of the kingdom moved to the city.

The fact that Madrid was the capital of the Court brought many people there, either to work as officials or to do business. This meant that many tavern owners inflated the prices, so that when presenting the bill to the diners they were left with a look of disfigurement, giving rise to the comparison with the face of pain of the Virgin (the Sorrowful Virgin).
