Meewasin is a non-profit organization that exists to ensure a healthy and vibrant river valley, with a balance between human use and conservation, for the benefit of present and future generations, in Saskatoon & area.
This is accomplished by providing leadership in the management of its resources, promoting understanding of conservation and beneficial use of the Valley, and undertaking programs and projects in river valley development and conservation - all for the benefit of present and future generations.
In the Meewasin Valley, there are 67 square kilometers of land and over 90km of established trail, which has seen up to 1.87 million trail visits per year. The area also features sites managed by Meewasin that help people connect to nature such as Beaver Creek Conservation Area, the Northeast Swale, Saskatoon Natural Grasslands, the River Landing Spray Area, and the Cameco Meewasin Skating Rink at Nutrien Plaza.
Created in 1979 by an Act of the Government of Saskatchewan, it is guided by The Meewasin Valley Authority Act, it is the means by which the three participating parties (City of Saskatoon, Government of Saskatchewan, and University of Saskatchewan) have chosen to best manage the Meewasin Valley in the South Saskatchewan River Basin. The creation of Meewasin is based on the concept that the partners working together through a single agency – Meewasin – can accomplish more than they could individually.
The Meewasin App is currently featuring Indigenous Connections to the Northeast Swale with content that was made possible thanks to Western Economic Diversification Canadian Experiences Fund.
Meewasin actively stewards the 6,700 hectares of the Meewasin Valley through an integrated resource management program to improve the health of these ecosystems. As a non-profit organization, Meewasin relies on donations and volunteers for sustainability.
