App Store Description

Matching Pairs is the first game since the highly acclaimed Mr Thorne Does Phonics apps which have had huge success on Youtube and the App Store around the world.

Mr Thorne's Matching Pairs is educational and fun. 99 games of randomly assorted cards based on the order of teaching letters and sounds, beginning with s, a, t, p, i, n, m and so on, leading onto digraphs and trigraphs such as 'sh' and 'igh'. Finally the spellings become more challenging with games focussing on the /or/ sound in 'talk' and the 'sh' sound in 'ocean'.

The player is encouraged to read the word and find the matching word. The words are not voiced because it is intended that the child should be blending the sounds together rather than hearing the whole word. The focus sound has been highlighted within each word for recognition however in later levels the entire word is coloured as the player's reading skills should be more advanced by this point.

Game structure: The words in each game are in sync with a child's ability, so the 's' level will not have the word 'sausage' because the 'soft g' words are in a later level. The 's' level instead features words that are easy to blend and read: 'sat', 'sip'.

There are some levels which feature 'HFW' - high frequency words (words that don't always sound how they are spelt) like 'was' and 'people'.

Each game is playable at any difficulty level and a silver star is awarded upon completion. A gold star is awarded if the player can correctly match all the cards in under 16 turns.

Can you achieve all of the gold stars?

Love from Mr Thorne xx
