The Volunteer Journey

This is your first step in learning about how you can make an impact by supporting a family during their cancer journey. It’s your chance to ask questions and meet the Nankind Team! We will share why this is like no other volunteer opportunity. Whether it is virtual, in-home, or administrative and fundraising support, we have you covered. Becoming a Volunteer Angel requires a deep commitment; however the rewards are immeasurable.



Everyone has a unique personality, skills, and desires to share. Our Volunteer Experience Team will schedule an interview to learn all about you! This is your chance to highlight your childcare experience, all the wonderful things about you, and why you would make an amazing Volunteer Angel! The screening process is designed to ensure our Nankind kids will be safe, and our volunteers will be able to fulfill their commitment to the program. Following your interview, you will be required to provide a police background check, proof of CPR and First Aid Training, proof of full vaccinations, and references relating to childcare.



One amazing part of becoming a Nankind volunteer is our specialized training. Our grief and bereavement training is life changing. You will learn how to answer tough questions kids ask about their parent’s cancer like “Will my mom die?” You must complete our free online training course and an interactive virtual group session to learn more about your responsibilities. Nankind has a commitment to providing you with ongoing training and support. You will learn a variety of coping skills and activities that enhance your ability to deliver our programs. All supplies will be provided free of charge.



Now you are ready to provide support! This is where the magic happens. We connect you with a family that meets your expectations. At Nankind we have a 98% success rate in matching our families and volunteers. We consider all the things we learned about you in our Discovery Process, like your experience, availability, location, and personality to find the perfect fit with what our Nankind family needs. Our expert team will be with you every step of the way to ensure your match is a success. A first visit will be arranged with our staff, to introduce you to your Nankind family. Together we will create a schedule for future visits. Your commitment to the family is essential as our Nankind children need consistency to benefit from the program.

You are engaged, passionate and committed to your Nankind Family and your relationship is flourishing. Through a child-led lens, you will create a fun and safe space for a child to thrive, while you transform their life one visit at a time. You will gain expertise and confidence as you help a child navigate through the stress of living with a parent’s cancer illness or death. Delivering our programs helps build resilience and coping skills for children as they learn to navigate their parent’s cancer. You will have access to an abundance of resources. Our free, online “store” Is filled with activities, toys and books. For Fun-in-a Box-Program, a monthly fun filled box of unique and creative activities is delivered to your door. After each visit, you must give feedback online so we can support your volunteer journey. Volunteers tell us this is the most meaningful and rewarding experience of their lives.
Our Volunteer Angels must commit to six months of service; however, a cancer journey lasts much longer. We love it when our Volunteer Angels can continue to support the family through recovery or sometimes bereavement. It is always difficult to say goodbye, which is why we created our Graduation Celebration Process! One month before the end of your service, you will slowly wind down your visits while we help you plan a celebratory final visit! This will allow you to give your child an appropriate explanation of where you are going and why. You will give them a special personalized gift we provide to remember your time together
