It only takes a few nights of broken sleep to feel sleep deprived, but when you have a baby, broken sleep is part of normal life. This may make it harder to stay awake at night when feeding your baby.
If you’re breastfeeding, the hormones released (prolactin and oxytocin) have a relaxing effect and can exaggerate sleepiness. Falling asleep whilst breastfeeding can be dangerous and has the potential to result in suffocation to the baby, which is a recognised cause of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
“As a new mum, I was paranoid about the risks of falling asleep whilst feeding. I looked for apps or devices that would help me stay awake but was unable to find any. That is when I decided to make Nightfeeds.”
- Dr Neha Shah (Founder of Nightfeeds and Obstetrician)
Nightfeeds offers a simple way to help you stay awake at night. The app works by alerting you regularly and checking you’re still on top form. You set how often you want the alarm to go off and the app will ask you to tap the screen to confirm you’re up.
Nightfeeds is designed not to awaken others in the room - the alarm starts with a vibration which slowly escalates into an audible alarm if you don’t respond. We also have a nifty feeding timer so you can keep track of time.
Key features include:
1) Time setting – Manually decide how often you want the alarm feature to be activated.
2) Moving Target – To keep you alert, the app will make it more challenging for you to tap the “off” button.
3) Intelligent Timer – The app will intelligently decide when to sound the alarm depending on your reaction times.
We hope you find Nightfeeds useful!
