Odd Animal Out

“Odd Animal Out” provides people living with dementia, such as Alzheimer’s, with hours of enjoyment. Don't get us wrong: Its "play mechanics" do engage and stimulate the mind, but that's not the up-front focus here. Things are more casual.

The play mechanics are simple: The player has to find the animal that’s unique in a jungle full of other animals. It’s not as easy as it sounds, especially when there are a lot of them!

Key Features:

• The visual elements that are essential for successful navigation and activity-play are sufficiently bright, distinct, and large for our senior audience. We employ a Participatory Design approach, so our apps are all designed WITH - not FOR - people living with dementia.

• It utilizes an infinite-play structure, meaning that the player can play as long as they like per session.

• Although it’s very much like a classic game, it has been designed to decrease a sense of competitiveness by not keeping a formal score or fostering a sense of “winning” or “losing.” This can help reduce stress in some folks with dementia.

• Players can casually track their progress using the Level tracker, but it's not a prominent visual element.

• Players receive a positive feedback animation and sound effect at each successfully completed level.

Goose Hollow Studios LLC is a small worker-owned, worker-directed cooperative based in Portland, Oregon, USA. We’re nerds, nerds who have had loved ones with dementia in our lives. We work hard to bring moments of joy to folks like them!
