OtterSpotter is an iPad app for recording aerial otter observations. This app was created by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife's, Office of Spill Prevention and Response.
This app is specific for CDFW, OSPR usage.
However, being released into the public domain for use by others if it fits their needs.
The current version has been developed for aerial observation. It is recommend that you use an external bluetooth GPS for aerial data capture.
Generalization of this app is possible and may be attempted in a future version.
CDFW, OSPR has another app for SCAT (Shoreline Cleanup Assessment Technique) that is in the process of being generalized.
Note: this involves the capacity to replace/update the mapping base data, pick lists, etc.. but NOT the "data dictionary" of the data being collected (aka the data fields).
CDFW OSPR's geographic information systems (GIS) unit utilizes ESRI ® GIS software almost exclusively.
The survey data can be transferred via email, via iTunes or other methods if available. These other methods are dependent on the user's and/or user's organizational iPad setup and/or information technology (IT) protocols.
For further information about SCATalogue, please contact CDFW OSPR GIS at osprgis@wildlife.ca.gov.
Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
