What is it about?

Particle Patty is a playful video animation that demonstrates the role of particle motion in solids, liquids, and gases. Particle interaction and the arrangements of particles within different states of matter are represented clearly for users of all ages. Using hand gestures or manipulatives like tiddlywinks or coins, users can easily reinvent their understanding about particle speed as a factor in the change of state. Two versions of Particle Patty are presented, the first video showing a crystal warmed by a hot plate, and the second showing a crystal warmed by ambient air particles. In both, the particles change state.
