The Pau te Hau app has been designed to support the delivery of Pau te Hau – a teacher delivered high-intensity interval training (HIIT) program. Pau te Hau provides teachers the opportunity to incorporate HIIT during school lessons, such as during physical education classes. Pau te Hau includes a variety of pre-designed HIIT workouts, all of which require only 10-15 minutes to perform.

Features:

Displays user heart rates on screen for real-time feedback on exercise effort
Select from a variety of pre-designed, evidence-based HIIT workouts
Customise HIIT sessions by changing the work-to-rest ratio and number of intervals
Library of over 40 different exercise videos including simple exercise technique prompts
Sessions include brief videos of traditional Māori narratives, on which many sessions are based
Includes view of upcoming exercise within a session, and countdown timer
Dashboard displaying information such as greatest heart rate achieved
All heart rate data can be accessed after sessions for further analyses

Pau te Hau is a collaboration between researchers from Auckland University of Technology (New Zealand), University of Newcastle (Australia), University of Otago (New Zealand), and Victoria University (Australia). The funding for the research associated with Pau te Hau is provided by the Health Research Council New Zealand. Some images and support for Māori narratives provided by Toi Tangata.
