PocketStat

by GLENN ROSEN

What is it about?

In this day and age, it is increasingly difficult to separate conjecture from significance. PocketStat is a statistical fact checking tool built to make this discrimination less onerous. Use it to quickly assess statistical claims in manuscripts, seminars, posters, classes, and homework. Do you want to know whether the means of two groups differ from one another? Or if two correlations are significantly different? Or would you like to estimate the mean of population while only knowing the median? All these questions can be answered with PocketStat.

PocketStat also has a number of calculators for everyday statistical tasks. Handy power calculators let you quickly estimate the number of subjects needed for your next study (or determine whether the study you’re evaluating has enough subjects). Use the app to compute the chi-square statistic for a 2 × 2 contingency table. You can also calculate single-sample t-tests. Upgrade to PocketStat Premium and compute chi-squares in matrices as large as 6 × 10, and perform two-sample t-tests (independent and correlated).

Sadly, PocketStat can’t resolve truth from…um…alternative truths in all circumstances, but it’s a start.

************IMPORTANT CAVEAT******************
PocketStat does not use statistical libraries, so "p" values are computed by closed form equations. Although these "p" values are quite close to the actual value, they are meant only to be used as estimates, not for publication.
