ReportIt Anonymously allows for the completely anonymous uploading of censored video footage captured in the app - the app contains on-device face recognition software which automatically censors the faces of people in frame in real-time (both on front-facing and rear-facing cameras). Unlike censoring filters which can be found within apps such as Instagram where any censoring filters exist on a separate layer above the video, meaning theoretically they could easily be stripped off, the censoring in ReportIt Anonymously is embedded into the video file itself, overwriting the pixels of the face with black pixels meaning it cannot be reversed as there is nothing to reveal.
The app has no signup, no user ids and device tracking, all posts are uploaded completely anonymously with no additional metadata to ensure the total privacy of the uploader.
Footage captured within the app can easily be uploaded with a title, description (supporting hashtags), and location information which can be selected with varying degrees of specificity: no location data, vague location data, or specific location data. The entire post payload is visible to the user in its raw form before it is uploaded to the server to ensure complete transparency.
Posts can be upvoted, downvoted, and shared to Twitter by any user for greater exposure. Posts are shown by either the most popular or the most recent depending on preference.
The main aim of this app is to allow people to share experiences they wouldn't otherwise be able to for fear of retribution or punishment. Highlighting abuses of power, acts of brutality, protest, and much more. The app should be used to give a voice to those who wouldn't otherwise have one, to give a platform for videos which otherwise wouldn't have been posted - with this in mind it must be noted that any misuse or abuse of the app's virtues of anonymity and privacy will ruin the experience of all other users and prevent it from accomplishing it's desired goal. As a result, the policing of posts is vital: use the reporting features if you see something which doesn't belong on this app. If you see something which you feel needs a wider audience then share it on Twitter using the built-in sharing feature. The aim of this app is to allow people to highlight injustices which would otherwise go unchecked, please help ensure that it stays that way.
