SU horticulturists began documenting and recording it's collections in 1985, soon gaining accreditation as an arboretum from the American Public Gardens Association (APGA). As recently as 2018, the Arboretum achieved the Level III Accreditation granted by ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program and the Morton Register of Arboreta. SU’s mission is to display a diverse and vast collection of herbaceous and woody plant species in an attractive campus setting. The plants are valuable resources and enhance the student, faculty, staff, and visitor experience through education, research, and aesthetic enjoyment.
